Common cause of Cough in Child and its Cure

  • Wet Cough: This is caused by fluid secretions and mucous found in the wind pipe and lungs. The coughing removes fluid from lower respiratory track.

Children younger than 4 months do not cough more but if they do, it is important to call a doctor. Once your child is one year old, cough is nothing more than a cold.

When to Worry

Signs that baby’s cough may include a cold are:

  • Runny nose
  • Fever at night
  • Sore throat
  • Sounds like dry hack


American Academy of pediatrics advises that medications don’t work against cold and cough for children under 6 years as per the various studies. Therefore it is important to stick to natural methods such as honey, saline drops and cool mist humidifier.


When the baby wakes up in the middle of night with a barking cough and faces difficulty in breathing. Croup is usually caused by viral infection. Croup generally affects children under 5 years of age.

Treatment: Consider the following techniques to ease your baby in breathing.

  • Let the child breath the air from cool mist humidifier.
  • Run shower and close the bathroom door. Let your child breath in the steamy air.


It is a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs caused by various conditions including the common cold. The baby will be very tired in Pneumonia.
Treatment: It is important to call a doctor in case of Pneumonia especially if the baby has a fever. The treatment depends on whether the infection is viral or bacterial.


Doctors generally agree that Asthma is not common in children younger than 2, unless there is a family history of allergies and asthma. A cough is accompanied by noisy breathing. In case of asthma, baby will start out with cold symptoms and runny eyes.
Treatment: It is important to keep an eye on baby’s respiratory rate. If it is 55 breaths per minute or more, your baby is suffering from respiratory distress. A lot of fluids, plenty of rest and cool mist humidifier should be given to baby.
