Infant Diapering Basics

Infant Diapering Basics

Diapering an Infant is a task in itself. Changing Diaper of their Infant is something in which New Parents spend most of their time. As per a rough estimate babies may use 10 Diapers a day or more.
In the beginning, Diaper changing might seem complicated but with practice you will find it easy.

Get ready for it :

Before beginning, you need to gather all necessities:

  • Diaper
  • Warm water/Cotton Balls/Water Wipes
  • Diaper Ointment or petroleum jelly
  • Cloth Diaper or changing pad for placing under your baby

Remember to keep all these supplies within your hand reach. Don’t leave your baby unattended even for a single second. Keep your phone on silent during that time.

Don’t forget even Newborns can surprise you with their rolling ability.

Wiping :

For wiping Your Infant during Diapering, you may use wet washcloth, cotton balls or water Wipes. Gently wipe your baby from front to back. Remember, never wipe back to front especially on girls as it can make bacteria spread leading to urinary tract infection. For better reach, lift baby’s legs by the ankles. Make sure to clean the creases in thighs & buttocks.
In case of baby boy, keep a clean Diaper over the penis during changing because exposure to air causes boys to pee, on you or on the walls or anything within their range.
When you are done with wiping, pat baby dry with clean washcloth and apply Diaper ointment.

Disposable Diaper :

If you are using disposable Diaper for your Infant:
Open the Diaper; slide it under your baby by gently lifting baby’s legs & feet. The back part of baby’s Diaper should be about the level of baby’s belly button. Now bring the first part of baby’s Diaper up between your baby’s legs and onto belly.
Open the Diaper and slide it under your baby while gently lifting his or her legs and feet. The back part with the adhesive strips should be about level with your baby’s bellybutton.
Bring the front part of the Diaper up between your baby’s legs and onto belly and stick the Diaper properly. Make sure you don’t stick the tape on your baby’s skin.

Here are a few Diapering tips must to keep in mind:

  • If you are using Disposable Diaper, garbage should be emptied regularly. Along with this abstain from stinky Diaper pail to prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • When you notice marks around your baby’s legs & waist, the Diaper is too tight. Get a looser fit next time.
  • If you notice rashes at the Diaper opening around baby’s legs & waist then it is advised to change the brand of the Diaper you are using as sometimes baby is sensitive to certain brands of Diaper.
  • When Diapering a baby boy, place the penis in a downward position before fastening the Diaper. This will help in preventing the leaks from creeping above the waistline.
  • In case your baby’s umbilical cord has not fallen yet, fold Diaper below waistline to prevent irritations.
  • Make sure to wash your hands properly, after changing baby Diaper to prevent the spreading of germs.

Cloth Diaper :

These days disposable Diaper is the choice of most of the parents because of the convenience but there are some parents who prefer cloth Diaper because of their affordability & environment friendly nature.
Cloth Diapers are available in many sizes and shapes and require pinning. If you are using traditional cloth Diaper there are many ways to fasten them and one the common way to do is the triangular fold:
Fold the square in half to form triangle, (For Newborns & Babies, you might need to fold one side of the triangle down to few inches so that it fits your baby better)
Place baby in Diaper gently by lifting baby’s feet & legs and sliding the Diaper under. The longest of the triangle should be behind baby’s back. Bring the first part of the Diaper between baby’s legs and then to belly. Bring one side to overlap the center part and the other side on it so it overlaps the other two parts. Fasten all the three parts with a safety pin.
Besides this another method is the rectangular fold, this method is similar to the fold of rectangular Diapers:
Here you have to fold the Diaper in a rectangular shape. Some parents make an extra fold in the Diaper to cover maximum area (In front for baby boy and bottom for girl).
Position the Diaper under baby with long side facing the direction of baby. Bring bottom onto baby’s belly and bring one side around to fasten with safety pin and follow the same procedure with other.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while using cloth Diaper for your Infant:

  • Use oversize pins with plastic safety heads. Keep your hand between the pins & baby’s skin. In case you are not comfortable, use Diaper tape that comes with dispenser.
  • You may keep wet Diapers in the Diaper pail but remember to empty soiled Diaper in the toilet first (especially when baby is formula fed or on solid). You may rinse Diaper before washing it and for odor control you may spray the Diapers with water & baking soda.
  • Make sure to wash Diaper separately from other laundry and use a mild detergent which is hypoallergenic or recommended for infant clothing.
  • Avoid using antiseptic products or fabric softener as they can cause rashes on baby’s sensitive s
  • kin. Prefer hot water and double rinse the washing.Remember to wash your hands properly after changing baby’s Diaper to prevent the spread of germs.
