How to Clean a Baby’s Eyes, Ears and Nose Safely
One tiny sneeze, a little milk near the cheek, or some dry mucus around the nose can make new parents reach for the nearest cloth. But a baby’s face needs a soft touch. Their eyes, ears and nose are delicate, and cleaning too deeply can cause more harm than good.
The good news is that newborn face cleaning does not need a long list of products. Clean hands, lukewarm water, soft cotton and a few careful movements are usually enough.
Before You Begin
Wash your hands and place your baby on a safe, flat surface. Keep cotton balls, a clean washcloth and a soft towel close by. Never leave your baby alone on a bed, changing table or bath surface, even for a moment.
How to Clean a Baby’s Eyes Safely
Wet a clean cotton ball or soft cloth with lukewarm water. Squeeze out the extra water so it is damp, not dripping.
Close your baby’s eyelid gently and wipe from the inner corner, near the nose, towards the outer corner. Use a fresh cotton ball or a clean part of the cloth for the other eye. This helps avoid carrying dirt or infection from one eye to the other.
Do not rub the eyeball or use baby wipes directly on the eyelids and lashes. If there is dry or sticky discharge, soften it with damp cotton instead of pulling it away.
How to Clean a Baby’s Ears
A baby’s ears only need cleaning on the outside. Use damp cotton to wipe behind the ears, along the folds and around the outer ear. These areas can collect milk, sweat and moisture.
Never put cotton buds, fingers or any pointed object inside the ear canal. Earwax usually moves out on its own. Trying to remove it from inside may push it deeper or hurt the ear.
How to Clean a Baby’s Nose
For daily baby nose cleaning, gently wipe mucus or crust from around the nostrils with damp cotton or a soft cloth. Do not push cotton buds or wipes inside the nose.
When your baby has a blocked nose, ask your paediatrician about plain saline drops and a baby-safe nasal aspirator. Saline can help loosen thick mucus, while gentle suction may make feeding and sleeping more comfortable.
Where Baby Wipes Can Help
Milk dribbles, drool and mucus often spread beyond the nose and collect around the cheeks, upper lip, chin or behind the ears. Mother Sparsh 99% Pure Water Unscented Baby Wipes can make these little clean-ups easier, especially while travelling or after a feed.
As good as cotton & water, the wipes are unscented, extra moist and 3X thicker. They can be used on a baby’s face and body. Use the wipe gently on the skin around the nose and ears, but never insert it into the nostrils, ear canal or eyes.
When Should You Call the Doctor?
Speak to your baby’s doctor if an eye looks red or swollen, the discharge keeps returning, or a blocked nose makes it difficult for your baby to breathe or feed.
Baby hygiene is not about scrubbing every small spot. A slow hand, a fresh piece of cotton and a gentle clean are usually all your little one needs.
